The MIT Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS) is seeking candidates for tenure-track
faculty positions starting in July 2019 or on a mutually agreed date thereafter. Appointments will
be at the assistant or untenured associate professor level. Appointments will be made in
partnership with MIT departments and IDSS. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Engineering,
Computer Science, Operations Research, Economics or a related field by the start of their

general area of AI as it interacts with physical or social systems. We will consider candidates with
backgrounds and interests in the general areas of networks, statistics, machine learning, and
data-driven decision making as they pertain to complex societal challenges. The research is
expected to rigorously highlight the role of inference, learning, adaptation, or real time decision
making on the performance and resilience of such systems. Our focus will be particularly on
candidates whose work has strong foundation in one or more social science disciplines. Examples
of such research include:
- Smart services, with specific focus on creating data-driven solutions to intelligent
infrastructures (energy, transportation, finance, commerce) where both social and
economic systems are at play. Research addressing Issues related to robustness,
security, and privacy of smart/intelligent services and cyber-physical systems are
also emphasized.
- Foundations of decision making, learning, inference, and computation in multi-agent social and engineering systems. Topics of interest include interaction of such
systems via real-time markets and real-time decision making, understandings social
behavior of such systems, and formal investigations of fairness, ethics, and privacy.
